True Life: Dinner in the OC

27 Mar

Spring Break comes but once a year. While last year’s spring break had me visiting Berlin, Prague, Vienna, and Rome, this year’s afforded me the opportunity to experience some exciting new things as well (namely fainting and black eyes, but that’s a story for another day).

Last night my mom and I drove to Costa Mesa, CA to shop at the famed South Coast Plaza (I had huge success at the Nordstrom – score!) and meet up with my best friend, Whitney. The three of us enjoyed dinner at a place called Pizzeria Ortica. There is something about a slow meal with good food and great conversation that can’t be replicated! We began the meal off with a bottle of 2008 un-oaked Chardonnay – which definitely hit the spot (although I am quickly finding I prefer the oaked variety). We also had three rounds – scratch that, four including dessert – of delectable food. We began with a spin-off on bruscetta that featured lamb sausage, beans, and chiles. The toast it was served on was so buttery! The salad we had was good, but basically just whet my appetite for the eventual emergence of our wood-fired pizza. We got the “alla Norma” with mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes, and eggplant. Finally, the caramel and custard dessert was the perfect “night-cap” to a delightful meal.
If you ever find yourself in the greater Irvine/Costa Mesa area, definitely seek out this place. The service was good and the chefs weren’t bad looking either! We lucked out with a memorable meal, that made me thankful for my family and my best friend!
