Monday Musings

13 Apr

I’ve got just over a month left as an undergrad student at Cal, and I’ve gotta say 4 years has never gone by faster. I’ll save my college nostalgia post for a later date (and as a potential distractor for summer boredom) but I’ve got a lot to do in this last month and a lot on my mind, and of course I’m sitting in Berkeley’s International House (I-House for short) avoiding starting a 4 pager for my First Amendment class so instead I’m blogging. Yep, definitely one of “those” people now who sits in coffee shops sipping coffee blogging about who knows what. Sheesh.

I’m taking a great assortment of classes this semester – Cultural Psychology with Dr. Kaipeng Peng who’s a pretty big deal in the social psych world which has opened my eyes to how much culture plays a part in shaping our understanding of the world around us. I’m also really loving my Legal Studies course on diversity, discrimination, and American law and have had ample time to “nerd out” while I’ve been working on papers for these classes. I also just finished a 5 page paper psychoanalyzing a scene from The Hangover for Media Studies 101 (this scene here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGT8AeJ-cbo), which, despite my best efforts, isn’t as lame as you’d think it would be!

I’m compelled to write about school because in the last few weeks I’ve really realized how much I love it and benefit from it, and in this final semester many of my different academic interests are converging. I know that I’ll love law school but the prospect of having a year without academia is daunting, so I’ve suddenly been consumed with what I can do in that year to expand on the ground I’ve made in exploring certain areas of interest this semester, and I am becoming preoccupied with the desire to try and do SOMETHING to work to reduce ethnocentrism (and racism) in any way possible. For me personally, I have learned a lot about the world around me and the fact that it really takes all kinds through certain courses I’ve taken, but more importantly, through international travel and through forging connections with people from different cultural backgrounds than me.

I’ll hear from the Spanish government in the next few weeks and am excited about the prospect of going back over there and working with kids, while also furthering my cultural development and sense of self. Today in particular I’ve thought a lot about Barcelona and how much I loved my time over there, and I’ve also realized that I need to harness that energy and do something with it that can have the potential to enact positive change. This is all stream-of-consciousness and not flushed out, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about.

Okay, enough of the serious stuff – here’s a few random musings:
– current obsession – MGMT’s new album, Congratulations, comes out tomorrow and it is fabulous.
-new song I like: “I Know Nothing” – Lovestoned (Shaun Baker remix)
– my Dad saw both Jen Aniston and Adam Sandler in Oak Park today.
– The world is super small. Evidence? Amanda, Whitney, and I know all the same people and it keeps getting weirder.
