songs of summer.

30 Jul

A few things for me are synonymous with summer: trips to the beach, Starbucks iced coffee, backyard barbecues, and hearing the same few songs over and over while I drive. Summer 2009 was the summer of LMFAO “I’m in (name of city here), trick,” Iyaz and the endless replay, and Jeremih’s “Birthday Sex.” This summer’s playlist has been dominated by some songs I can’t get out of my head. Some I’m happy to have stay there, others are driving me nuts:

  • Cooler Than MeMike PosnerI love how this song has at least 3 different versions dominating the radio waves…but my favorite is undoubtedly the one with the heavy, club-like beat. I love the fact Mike Posner is my age, was a frat boy at Duke, and has a soulful-and-old-school-yet-simultaneously-hip sound.
  • California Gurls – Katy Perry Miss Perry likely missed the memo that she was a one (okay two) hit wonder. “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold” were catchy pop staples. Things started going downhill (and fast) with “Waking up in Vegas”. I mean, you know things are bad when a song by Ke$ha is a better Vegas jam than a song with “Vegas” actually in the title.  In all honesty, this song is overplayed, unoriginal, and uninspired. I read somewhere that Perry wrote it to try and compete with Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind.” Even though she coerced Snoop Dogg to make a guest appearance on the song, the east coast is clearly winning this battle.
  • Dynamite – Taio Cruz This is a catchy one  that will most definitely become over-played, but in the mean time I’ll crank up the volume, throw my hands up (not while I’m driving, Dad) and belt it out.
  • Love the Way You Lie – Rihanna f/ Eminem – To be frank, I don’t love the way Rihanna’s been doing anything lately. This song is everywhere. Eminem is everywhere. It’s nothing special. I like my summer songs to be upbeat, danceable, and unique. Rihanna, you should have  spent a little more time with Drake…it could have helped you.
  • Billionaire – some new guy f/ someone else– I tried not to like this song. I really tried. And while I’m not a huge fan of the rap part, there’s some really strong vocals here. The lyrics are terrible but there’s no denying that this song is good.

What’s your favorite summer song so far? Did I leave any out? Drop a line here…

My songs of summer are definitely “Rain is a Good Thing” by Luke Bryan and “Looking for a Good Time” by Lady Antebellum.

I know you like to keep this website cool, but I have to share a little country.

I absolutely can’t believe you like “Billionaire” I cringe everytime it’s played!!

But I completely agree about “Cooler Than Me”

and just to make you hate country even more- I was at the gym yesterday and this man (easily early/mid 40’s) was BLASTING Lady Antebellum on repeat (literally same song for 30min)… it was so loud I could sing-a-long with his headphones from across the gym.

The real problem is that you knew all the words to some country song!

Hahaha. And I did resist “Billionaire” but it lends itself to a solid belt-out in the car every once in awhile 🙂
