no day but today.

12 Aug

There’s nothing more “Summer in LA” than an evening picnic + concert at the Hollywood Bowl. In recent summers I’ve seen Les Miserables, John Mayer, and a special Disneyland-inspired symphony performance. This past Sunday, my mom and I went to see Neil Patrick Harris’ production of Rent and it is by far my favorite thing I’ve seen there yet.

I became a big Rent fan after I saw the film version in 2005 and this was a totally different experience. Nicole Scherzinger as Maureen was youthful and quirky – and who knew she has a great voice?! I also loved seeing Wayne Brady in the challenging role of Collins, the HIV-positive computer science professor madly in love with an HIV-positive drag queen. It’s a little bit hard to see what’s going on on stage in the cavernous Hollywood Bowl, but the songs more than make up for the abnormal venue.

Since Sunday night, I’ve been unable to get some of my favorite songs out of my head and have been singing many of them (Another Day, Light My Candle, etc.) out-loud which I’m sure annoys my family. Luckily, I’ve also been singing the viral video sensation “Bed Intruder Song,” but that’s a whole other story. Here’s some photos from our Rent-fest:

pre-show feasting. Jamon Iberico sandwich, crunchy and sweet broccoli salad, Maui onion potato chips, and Coppola Chardonnay. Nom.

waiting for the show to start.
Not pictured here are the gaggle of 15-year-olds sitting in front of us. I can’t even begin to describe how annoying they were, except that one of them had a little sister (no older than 10) who had her very own iPhone 4G.

forget regret or life is yours to miss. This was taken during my favorite song, Life Support. The quality is terrible because my phone is terrible.

Have you seen Rent? Favorite song/version you’ve seen?
