dinner downtown: the edison.

10 Aug

So my parents work in Downtown Los Angeles at this place:

The Los Angeles Times

…and since I’m now a tried-and-true Angeleno with nothing* to do this week before law school orientation, I decided to meet-up with my parents downtown after their work day for dinner and drinks! We’ll probably be doing this a lot throughout the year since my school is nearby – and I’m excited to explore all of the awesome eateries.

First up for was The Edison! Literally across the street from The Times, this place is pretty awesome. It’s housed in a former power plant that was erected in 1910 – and basically all of the original turbines and things are still there! The decoration inside combines styles from art nouveau to industrial gothic. They even have old-school silent films projected throughout the bar/lounge. My parents have been here before and this was first on their list of downtown musts. I liked the decor a lot, but it was SO dark it took almost the entire time we were there for my eyes to adjust – and it was a little hard to read the menu.

the bar.

love how the menu says "catalogue of parts."

The first order of business was obviously drinks. And lucky for us, it was still happy hour when we arrived! (Happy Hour is somewhat of a foreign concept for me – in Spain literally every hour is happy hour with beer costing the same as a Coca Cola Light and tapas often coming free with a 1,50 euro beer, but I digress.)

I decided to live dangerously and stray from my normal beer route and order a cocktail. I went with the Highland Breeze: Blanco Tequila, Pernod Absinthe, Cucumber Water, Agave Nectar, Fresh-Squeezed Lime Juice, and shaken and topped with a splash of soda. After two sips, I knew it wasn’t for me – it tasted like medicine. My dad went with a glass of wine, and my mom ordered (and loved!) The Mistress: Vodka, Hibiscus Liqueur, Fresh-Squeezed Lemon Juice, shaken lightly and topped with Prosecco. My parents insisted I order something else (it was happy hour after all!) – so I stuck with what I knew and got a Ranger IPA.

From the Ranger IPA website:

“This clear amber beauty bursts at the starting gate with an abundance of hops: Cascade (citrus), Chinook (floral/citrus), and Simcoe (fruity) lead off the beer, with Cascade added again for an intense dry hop flavor. Brewed with pale and dark caramel malts that harmonize the hop flavor from start to finish, Ranger is a sessionable splendor for all you hopinistas. Such a better choice.

For dinner, I went with the grilled veggie sandwich + french fries. Both were exceptionally good – and even better at $6 total! The print on the china kept with the old-fashioned vibe of the place as well. My mom ordered the same sandwich, and my dad loved his grilled cheese and tomato soup. You wouldn’t have to bribe me to go back here, that’s for sure!

a wall of the edison.

*Literally, this week I am doing nothing. The rest of my day included a 35-minute tempo run in which I spotted Mike Tyson (and his face tats!) on Santa Monica Boulevard and plowing through The Art of Racing in the Rain. Rough life, I know.

What’s your favorite restaurant in downtown Los Angeles? Or – what’s your favorite downtown in any city, anywhere?

Creeps me out that you got this posted practically before we got home. Thanks for not pointing out that I downed your reject drink, without pain I might add. We may be related after all.

LOL! It took me 25 minutes to get home from Olympic and Albany – good to know.

I, too, am a fan of India Pale Ale and have always wondered if the story of its origin (something about long sea voyages to India) is true. Casey
