learning to listen.

15 Aug

This pictureless post is a quick derivation from my normal “let’s recap all the fun things Gillian does in LA and all of the great meals she eats” programming. This post is more of a reminder for me – hoping that if I put it out there on the great big internetz it will hold me accountable.

I need to learn to listen to my body. I constantly push myself – at school, socially, in my workouts, etc. but sometimes, I need to be more attune to the little cues my body sends me about when it is time to give myself a break.

Last Saturday I thought I was fighting a headache – so I popped some Advil and went on a long run. Turns out I was getting sick, just with a little throat/nose thing. During my workout last night (run + spin) I felt sorta yucky – my back hurt which was a little weird, but I pushed on. I was set to go to Vegas this morning for a quick 24 hour trip with my good friends Jenn, Bryan, and Matt, but I woke up this morning with pink eye. Awesome. CLEARLY a sign that my body is telling me to slow down and get healthy before the next semester of madness sets in.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but I am hoping this post will serve as a short reminder for me (and for others) that if you don’t feel 100%, listen to your body. You will not lose conditioning with a little time off. You will not become unathletic with a few missed workouts. You will also not get better without time to rest and recuperate. Additionally, gyms are nasty places so hand sanitizer might be a good idea.

On that note, here are my workouts from last week. (Note the time off):

  • Monday: OFF
  • Tuesday: Run 3 mi. + Spin
  • Wednesday: 5 mi. run
  • Thursday: 3 mi. run + weights
  • Friday: OFF
  • Saturday: OFF
  • Sunday: Stand-Up Paddleboarding

I would say this coming week will be better – but I want to focus on getting healthy completely first.

Here are some of my favorite mood-brighteners from around the web lately:

Can we make “learning to listen” extend to advice from your roommate? That would be awesome Just so you aren’t too upset about missing out, we haven’t listened to house music once since we left. You would die.

    We’ll bring back presents!!!

    Get well soon!

I’m kinda bad at this too. I always work out, because I feel like a lazy you-know-what if I don’t. But sometimes our bodies need it.

      Thank you, Kaley!

It’s hard to change my mindset that sometimes part of being healthy IS slowing down and feeling lazy 🙂
