running reboot.

The great thing about running is it is always there. Regardless of my mood, running is there to reflect it. Besides just being a way for me to unwind, running allows me to push myself, connect with others, and it has given me some solid “me” time.

This past week, after the tragic events in Boston, when I wasn’t glued to Twitter following everything, I returned to running to clear my thoughts.

On Tuesday, I joined a running group through Meetup.com in DTLA. It was so nice running with people for the first time in awhile. I spent my 7 mile running chatting with a guy from Barcelona of all places which was a lot of fun. On the day after the Boston Marathon bombing, running with a group of like-minded people was a much-needed release.

We started at FIDM and ran through DTLA, Little Tokyo (which deserves its own post – one of my favorite parts of the city), then to Chinatown and then a loop through LA Historic Park. The view of the skyscrapers as the sun was setting was amazing.

I met up with the group again on Saturday for a little run down Figueroa to USC’s track. We did about 6 miles in all. My Garmin was acting up, but I’d guess we were averaging 7:45s. Running with people means I run faster. I also laughed that I was willingly running toward USC (my parents’ alma mater). I happened to be wearing my Rose Bowl Half Marathon shirt – which could be viewed as an ode to USC (since you know, they play there sometimes) or more of “thumbing my nose” at them – since the Rose Bowl is UCLA’s home stadium.

Speaking of thumbing noses…I sorta love this gargoyle on USC’s campus. #IDigress

On Sunday, I had a long run on the agenda to prepare for the OC Half Marathon on May 5. I did 5 miles out and 5 miles back on Wilshire – passing MacArthur Park, Southwestern Law School, through Koreatown, and just past La Brea. I listened to music, zoned out, and enjoyed the sun. I took a gel at mile 5…I don’t recommend the espresso flavor, just FYI.

macarthur park.

Besides enjoying some news routes, I have a few new favorite running jams:

Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore – This is my absolute current favorite running and spin song. Trust me. on my I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T shit hustlin’.

Don’t Hold the Wall – Justin Timberlake

Tunnel Vision – Justin Timberlake – His entire album is amazing, but these two are slightly more up-tempo.

Pour it Up – Rihanna

Started From the Bottom – Drake

We Come Running – Youngblood Hawke RAC Remix

Random: On Thursday I jetted over to the El Rey theater on Wilshire to catch one of my favorite new bands’ performances. Purity Ring was AMAZING live. Their set was almost bewitching. Their stuff is good ro run to as well.

Belispeak II – Purity Ring f/ Danny Brown

Ungirthed – Purity Ring

I have a lot more to share – living closer to work and school has given me more time to blog – so I’ll be back soon.

**Last little blurb: On June 23, I’m going to participate in a 3-hour Spin-A-Thon with a local spin studio, YAS Fitness, to raise funds for ThinkCure!, a non-profit in Los Angeles that raises funds to accelerate collaborative research to cure cancer. Please consider donating (here). Any amount makes a difference. Thank you :).
