beat blue monday. [clif bar giveaway!]

So one thing I don’t like about the holiday season is how every day between Thanksgiving and Christmas seems to have some sort of cutesy, hashtag-friendly name. Think I’m wrong? This year I heard about the usual Black Friday and Cyber Monday — but also Small Business Saturday,  Giving Tuesday, and of course the once-in-a-lifetime “Thanksgivingukkah” and the please-never-use-again “Friendsgiving.”

But these terms have trickled into 2014…

Did you know that apparently “Blue Monday” is a thing?  Some people refer to the last Monday in January as “Blue Monday.”  It makes sense — the holidays are a distant memory,  some New Years resolutions have fallen by the wayside, and credit card statements from the holidays are popping up, so this can be a depressing time.

While the term itself might be a little bit annoying, I’m all about getting people outside and active, so I was so excited when one of my favorite fitness-friendly brands reached out with a giveaway to help combat Blue Monday.  Clif Bar is offering five That’s G readers a Clif Bar gift pack to fuel them to beat Blue Monday — or the winter blues in general — by getting outside and getting active.

So on January 20th, try to take your workout outdoors for a little new motivation. Studies show that stress relief is faster in natural environments than urban ones. Getting outdoors also helps concentration and productivity plus it releases endorphins to boost your mood. This isn’t so daunting for me in LA — where the high today is 85 degrees! But in the rest of the country, even indoor exercise will boost your mood and lift your spirits.

On Monday,  I’m substituting an early-am spin class so I’ll be inside (lame).  Some of my favorite outdoor activities are running (duh), hiking, stand-up paddle-boarding (SUP), and cycling.

On Monday night after my Trial Advocacy class, I headed out to my hometown.  My mom’s birthday was Tuesday and I had the morning free, so my mom and I planned a fun morning.

First, we hiked to the top of China Flat.  I seriously love where I grew up and you can’t beat the views from this hike.

After our hike and a Starbucks run, we changed and headed to brunch along Westlake Lake at Zin Americana. By some miracle, my brother was able to join us despite his phone being off.

As we were enjoying the view, my brother ran into one of his “homies” hanging out by the water. My brother yelled “I’ll talk to you later, it’s my mom’s birthday!!!”

IMG_4724The waitress heard my brother’s yell and brought my mom out a birthday dessert of crème brûlée. Such a nice touch!

IMG_4725Unfortunately after brunch I had to head back into the city to go to mock trial program at a middle school.  The kids are working hard and last week we saw the first glimpses of their mastery of the facts and their cross-examination skills. Can’t wait for the final trial in November!

Tuesday night, I met up with my running group. We did a 5.50 mile run down Figueroa and back, with one lap around USC’s track.

IMG_4728There is something pretty magical about running around this track — maybe because the band was practicing, or the lights…I don’t know. I’m not an SC fan really, but I am starting to think maybe coming here might be good running juju.

So, almost everyone at Loyola is on Spring Break this week. Unfortunately, there is no spring break in federal court. #sadface. My co-externs and I are (relatively) plugging through this week but I am tireddddd. There are lots of fun things on the horizon, though: later this month I’m heading to Vienna, Austria for a moot court competition, and I’ll also have more free time once moot court practices are over. #woot. I’ve been so busy with work and extra-curriculars that I’ve felt somewhat like a chicken running with their head cut off. Whoops. Here’s what I’ve been up to lately:

Last Thursday, Whitney and I took a Soul-Cycle class (with THE BEST instructor, Laura Crago). We dragged her boyfriend, Tyler, and Tyler’s BFF/our friend, Joe. Joe was a beast, and well, let’s just say two days later Tyler need icy hot delivered to him and had trouble putting on his shoes and socks. Poor guy.

To break up the work day, we’ve been trying to eat at a variety of DTLA eateries. We tried UMAMIcatessen recently – and I loved the Truffle Burger.

When I’m not moot court-ing on Sunday mornings, I try to join my buddies for a short Runyon Hike (and a mimosa or two afterwards…again, whoooops). They’re all trying to get in shape for our friends’ A.K. and Andrea’s wedding in July, so obviously I support the physical activity.

On Friday, Armita, Aviva, and I went to a concert – Adrian Lux and Morgan Page at Club Nokia. The show was great – I was SO happy when Morgan Page played my two favorite songs of his, Addicted and Body Work, one right after the other.

On Saturday, I bolted out the door for a dentist appointment, and then went to a delicious lunch at Pitfire Pizza for my friend Meredith’s surprise birthday party. Meredith’s boyfriend threw the party, and she was SO surprised – she literally burst out crying when she saw all of us. It was so nice to reconnect with Meredith and a few other girls from my sorority. As corny as it sounds — and a few years ago I’d NEVER thought I’d say this — there really is truth to the “sorority bond.”

Later that night, Taylor, Armita, Aviva, and I grabbed dinner and went to a concert at the Hollywood Palladium – we saw Sound Tribe Sector 9. I’d never heard them before but really enjoyed their electronic/psychedelic rock vibe.

This was a fabulous weekend – but I am totally paying the price this week. Three cups of coffee at work today and I was still a zombie. My workouts are sucking this week, too, but I’ll try and get to bed early and try and un-shamble my life by the weekend.

Two important questions:

1. Anyone ever have/throw a surprise party? Negatory on both accounts. I’m nosy AND not the best with secrets.

2. Best concert you’ve ever been to?  The first time I saw Girl Talk live might take the cake…or when I saw Passion Pit perform (before they were huge) the summer I interned at Chiat\Day.

If you haven’t been able to tell by reading this blog, I love traditions. One thing I have done on this blog for awhile now is to recap my year via songs. [Check out 2010 and 2011 here!] I love music and I think it’s a great way to reminisce on the past year – plus I like re-reading these posts to remember everything that happened in that year! January – Calvin Harris Feel So Close

I picked this song because it reminds me of the best winter break ever – where I checked out a ton of new restaurants, went on a bunch of LA hikes, went out, and explored LA. In January I also started second semester and reunited with some of my favorite AXOs,  celebrated my birthday with a dinner + drinks, and ran a half-marathon with one of my best law school friends, Blake, at the Rose Bowl, and battled running injuries off and on.

February  – Big Sean f/ Nicki Minaj – Dance

In February, I met my first real blog friend in person (Katherine of Left Coast Contessa). I also became re-obsessed with spin (indoor cycling) after almost a YEAR away and spent more time in the gym. Other than that, February was a pretty low-key month. I was briefly obsessed with this song due to the part when Nicki Minaj says “Islands of Waikikiiiiiiiiii.” I annoyed everyone repeating that for a few weeks.

March – Flo Rida f/ Sia – Wild Ones

In March, I took a torts midterm, headed to Palm Springs with Whitney, Matt, and Jenn, and was able to fight off a knee injury to run three miles with my Dad during his marathon. During March I also went to my first Kings game, headed home to celebrate my brother’s 21st birthday, and studied a good amount.

April – Gotye – Somebody That I Used to Know (FatRat remix)

April was a pretty intense school month – I had a lot of assignments due and geared up for finals. I had a beach day with my law school bests, went to a couple of comedy shows, had an oral argument, and lived vicariously through my parents’ trip to Vegas. I also did the She Runs LA 10k, tried Pure Barre, and did  The Color Run with my friend Riley. At the end of the month I went to a  Bruce Springsteen concert!

May – The Naked & Famous – Young Blood (Tiësto & Hardwell Remix)

Like any month where finals occur, the majority of it is spent studying. I spent the first 2+ weeks studying for and taking my finals, punctuated by small study breaks with my law school budz – like the time we celebrated Cinco Day Drinko instead of studying for Torts. In May I officially FINISHED 1L buttttt then immediately spent a week on the write-on competition to join a law review or a journal.  I finally kick-started summer with kayaking with my mom, a hike with Taylor, and some solid vedge-time. I also discovered my love for SoulCycle in May.

June – Carly Rae Jepsen Call Me Maybe Mash-ups (Call Me Greyhound – Swedish House Mafia + Call Me Maybe v. 99 Problems)

June was officially summer. I kicked it off with a short trip to SD  with Jenn where I PR’d in the half-marathon (1:38:55), began my externship at the criminal courts building, did a little paddle boarding  (I still have a bruise on my hip),went to Dodger games, hiked, and spent a weekend in SF where Whitney, Kathleen, and I created the “cerveza cycle.”

July – Kirko Bangz “Drink in my Cup”

July started off with a bang with a Fourth of July 10k in the Palisades, followed up with a little rage-fest with my section budz. I also discovered electronic musician Sahy Uhns, celebrated my blog’s third birthday, and saw The Producers at The Hollywood Bowl.

August – Kanye West f/ Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz “Mercy” 

In August, I saw The Hood Internet perform live, was inspired by various Olympic endeavors + caught up with friends from home, wrapped up my externship, went through On Campus Interviewing at Loyola, and traveled to Orange County with my mom for a few days where we saw Pageant of the Masters, paddle-boarded, and soaked up the sun. I also missed a one-night stint in Vegas due to a sudden onslaught of an illness, serving as a reminder that sometimes I need to listen to my body. I also celebrated Aviva’s birthday on the Sunset Strip and went back to school as a 2L.

September – Psy “Gangam Style”

In September, I ran my high school’s annual pancake breakfast race, hit up the SC/Cal game, and went to Monterey for my friend Angela’s wedding. I also started going to Trivia night at Barney’s Beanery in WeHO. When I wasn’t gallivanting around, I was busy with my course-load (Con Law, Law of Sales, Torts II, and Ethical Lawyering) as well as my extra-curricular activities of the Entertainment Law Review and the Wilhelm C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration team. #phew

October – Adrian Lux “Teenage Crime” 

In October, I continued the trivia night tradition, played tourist in Hollywood, spent a weekend in San Francisco for the Nike Women’s 13.1, celebrated my friend Blake’s birthday in Manhattan Beach, and saw Adrian Lux perform live at the Exchange in DTLA. All in all, a fantastic month.

November – Zedd “Clarity” oh…and Morgan Page f/ Greg Laswell – Addicted 

I hit up another SC game (this time v. Oregon), saw Book of Mormon, and visited my parents at the newsroom of the Los Angeles Times on election night! I also ran two 5ks – the ‘Stache Dash in Costa Mesa with my roommate and her boyfriend, and the Conejo Valley Turkey Day Trot at Cal Lutheran University with my running buddy Hannes on Thanksgiving morning. I also enjoyed a long weekend at home for Thanksgiving that was punctuated by our annual “Blackout Wednesday” tradition.

December – I couldn’t pick just one: Will.i.am f/ Britney Spears “Scream & Shout” AND Bingo Players + Flo Rida “I Cry

I spent the overwhelming majority of December studying and taking finals. I finished on December 14th and then celebrated in Manhattan Beach. Celebrations continued with Loyola Bar Review, the Santa Monica Pub Crawl, and my friend’s Hawaiian Christmas party. My family and I spent Christmas Day in Las Vegas (#VegasChristmas) and the very last week of December has been soul(cycle)-filled.

So after my bout of pink eye and a missed trip to Vegas last week, I healed up quickly after the saintly doctor at the Urgent Care on Wilshire and La Cienega fixed me up with some medicine. I laid low for a few days, did a lot resting/discovering new reality shows (Honey Boo Boo is my new fav), and just tried to get better.

On Friday, I was well enough to go on a nice little morning hike with Jenn and her friend (and now our friend) Ryan.

Later that night, I met up with a bunch of my friends for my friend Emily’s 23rd birthday at Bodega Wine Bar in Santa Monica. I sipped on the “Villa Alena,” an Italian sparkling wine. It was super sweet – and had hints of raspberry, cherry, and peach. A departure from my normal IPA (don’t worry, I ordered a Racer 5 after), but I liked it a lot.

On Saturday, I wasn’t able to run long, but I was able to kick it poolside for one of my law school BFF’s birthday…Aviva’s 23rd! (I swear not all of my friends are babies!) We kicked off the day at the Best Western on Sunset. It was the nicest Best Western I have ever been to – just look at that pool! It felt like such a little respite from Los Angeles. Total vacation mode.

Later, a few more friends joined us for dinner at Pink Taco, cake, and drinks at The Den. I had a great time celebrating one of my best friend’s birthdays, and it was such a nice way to end my last weekend before starting 2L.

On Sunday, I was at school all day for an orientation for the journal I am on this year, the Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review. Today marked the official start of 2L. The most noticeable thing was getting upgraded from 1L parking (underground) to the above ground parking with this sweet view.

Finding this gem in my Law of Sales textbook was also a mood-brightener.

I only had one class today – Con Law. It was definitely interesting and the Professor seems great. It was nice being back on campus, reconnecting with some people, seeing the crazed 1Ls, and getting back into the swing of things. This year will be nuts, but I’m excited for it.

Here are my workouts from last week – it was a REALLY mellow week with my random illness. Need to get back on track if a fall marathon is going to be a reality!

After a whirlwind weekend in SF, I was overdue to get re-acquainted with my home, good ol’ Los Angeles, this past weekend.

It kicked off on Thursday with dinner with 4/5 my law school posse at Toscanova in the Century City Mall. The pizza was delicious, but with everyone’s different eating styles we ended up looking like we ordered the big kids’ version of a kid’s meal.

After dinner, we saw Moonrise Kingdom. It was quirky and weird, but also hilarious. I loved it.

Friday featured a trek out to the Chavez Ravine for my friend A.K.’s birthday to see the Dodgers lose ten-nothing to the Mets. Boo.

No trip to Dodgertown is complete without some solid Dodger eats. And Friday night fireworks to get us in the mood for the 4th of July.

I got up bright and early on Saturday to pick up Whitney for a Malibu-filled day. First, we hiked to Escondido Falls – a short but challenging hike! Some of the rocks even had ropes you had to hold onto in order to hoist yourself up.

It was gorgeous and I totally recommend this hike.

And headed to my favorite little pseudo-private beach in Malibu Colony.

On Saturday night, I met up with Aviva, Armita, and Aviva’s friend Kyle for the Eat. See. Hear. outdoor screening of Zoolander at Paul Revere Middle School in Brentwood.

If you know me, you know that Zoolander is one of my favorite movies (of all time) and that I quote it incessantly. (“Lucky for you no one I know reads your little TIME magazine or whatever it’s called.”)

I chowed at one of the food trucks – these are the Fingerling Potatoes and the Blackened Chicken sliders from the Vizzi truck. Pricey but they were both thebomb.com.

On Sunday, I got in a workout and ended the evening with dinner with my parentals on Larchmont Blvd. I have lots of posts on the way – my thoughts on taking a breather from oh-so-many IPAs, a fun Fourth of July 10k on the way, some recent workout reviews, etc.

I need to get back in action in terms of blogging. So much has happened since I blogged last week!

I had an eventful second week of work – the jury trial I have been watching came to an end on Thursday in an anti-climactic hung jury. This week was also fun outside of work too, and I was insanely busy.

On Monday, after my gym workout, I tried a new-to-me yoga place with Whitney called CorePower Yoga in West LA. On Mondays, they have a free, open class that left me super sweaty and yet relaxed. I quickly became a fan and am going to try and make it here more often, and probably do a full workout-review of this place at some point.

Tuesday night featured a trip to the Chavez Ravine for a Dodger game with Aviva and her parents at Dodger Stadium! I have been a Dodger fan from a young age, and try to make it to a few games every season. This was an exciting 5-2 win over the cross-town rivals, the Angels, which was awesome. I also scored a Mike Scoscia bobble-head! Aviva and I enjoyed the Dodger game classic of Dodger dogs and beer.

On Thursday, I met up with my Aunt Melinda and Uncle Casey for dinner in Pasadena at La Grande Orange Cafe. They were in town for a short stint and it was so nice to see them. We each had a drink in the bar before dinner – I went with the local Point the Way IPA from Glendale.

My Aunt and I each ordered the Short Rib tacos for our entree which were delicious, and we shared the deviled egg app which was spot-on.  The service was great – we scored some free English muffins on our way out, as well as incredible salted chocolate chip cookie. (Our server was CJ in case you want to make a special request!) My uncle didn’t love his chicken and cinnamon roll duo, but overall I think this is a pretty solid option for lunch or dinner in the ‘dena.

After dinner, I coaxed Casey and Melinda to get frozen yogurt with me at 21 Choices. My roommate introduced me to this place a few yeas ago and I have been fanatical ever since. It’s like Cold Stone – you pick a yogurt and various mix-ins – allowing you to get creative. I went with a suggested creation – the “oatmeal cookie” which consisted of vanilla yogurt, cinnamon, cookie dough, and granola. Thank goodness they have a “tres small” size or else I would have keeled over from fullness.

My judge’s courtroom was “dark” on Friday so I got an unexpected day-off which was pretty sweet. I decided to take it relatively easy and just do things I wanted to do that I normally can’t. My first stop was Urth Cafe for a coffee.

Next on the agenda was Runyon Canyon Yoga. If you live in LA this is a serious gem – they offer 3-4 COMPLETELY donation-based yoga classes per day. This was my second time going, and there is something really awesome about outdoor yoga under the sun. After the class, I decided to hike Runyon, which was fun. I never really go hiking by myself, but I enjoyed it.

After some errands, I met up with Aviva and Armita for happy hour/early dinner downtown at my fav pizza place, Urbano Pizza Bar. We tried the “Quattro” and the “Fennel” pies, and both were scrumptious. A Stone IPA was also imbibed. They have an incredible happy hour – from 3-6 pm, M-F, all pizzas are half-off!

We also checked out neighboring Library Bar (checking off another DTLA bar off my list!) I liked the place, but it was so insanely dark, especially for it still being light outside. We enjoyed a drink, chatted, and randomly ran into my friend Matt there. Small world.

Saturday morning Aviva and I drove out to Malibu to meet up with Taylor for a day of paddle-boarding, swimming, “naps in the sun” and his usual BBQ feast. It was a particularly windy day, meaning while I was paddling out I got knocked over by a huge wave and crashed into some rocks on the shore…so I have some gnarly scrapes and gashes that complement my bruise from shooting last weekend rather nicely. I am a little bit sore (scrapped my plan to go running today sadly) but it was otherwise really fun, and I got back out there. Swimming in the Pacific was awesome too, but it really made me realize just how badly I need to get into actual swimming shape. Here are some photos from the day…

Now I’m hanging out with my family (my brother is back after his junior year in Santa Cruz) for Father’s Day.
